TCO = Total Cost of Ownership — what a product costs to own per year, not just the upfront price.
What we include in $/year
- Consumables: filters, pads, liners, desiccants, granules.
- Energy (quiet mode): a simple estimate assuming sleep/low settings.
- First-year total: device price + 12 months of consumables/energy.
- Later years: consumables/energy only.
What we don’t include: rare repairs, shipping, optional accessories.
How we calculate (simple)
- $/month consumables × 12 + energy/year = $/year
- Energy (rule of thumb): W × hours/day × 365 ÷ 1000 × $/kWh
(We assume sleep/low modes to keep noise and cost down.)
Example TCO snapshots (no surprises)
Litter & Odor
Whisker Litter-Robot 4 — liners + carbon filter on a cadence; run cycles daytime.
Shop: View on Amazon · Read review →
- Consumables: drawer liners (swap as filled), carbon filter (monthly/bi-monthly)
- Energy: short cycle bursts; negligible at household rates
- $ tips: buy liners in bulk; keep a tight seal; use anti-vibration pads to reduce re-cycles
Tidy Cats Breeze XL — pellets + pad; very predictable cadence.
Shop: View on Amazon · Read review →
- Consumables: pads weekly, pellets monthly (typical single cat)
- Energy: none
- $ tips: stick to XL refills or compatible generics that actually fit
Water (Fountains)
Catit PIXI Fountain — quiet on low; simple monthly filter plan.
Shop: View on Amazon · Read review →
- Consumables: PIXI triple-action filter monthly/bi-monthly
- Energy: low-watt pump on sleep/low
- $ tips: pre-rinse filters; keep water at max line (quieter + fewer replacements)
PETLIBRO Capsule Fountain — tidy capsules; easy cadence.
Shop: View on Amazon · Read review →
- Consumables: capsule pads/carbon monthly
- Energy: low-watt pump on low
- $ tips: silicone mat under base cuts hum (saves you from chasing “upgrades”)
Feeding
PETLIBRO Granary Feeder — desiccant + batteries over time.
Shop: View on Amazon · Read review →
- Consumables: desiccant (monthly/bi-monthly), AA batteries (if you use backup)
- Energy: wall power + backup draw only when needed
- $ tips: swap desiccant on schedule; don’t overfill past line (reduces waste)
Air (Odor control near litter)
Levoit Core 300S — cheap to run on Sleep; main cost is the filter.
Shop: View on Amazon · Read review →
- Consumables: HEPA+carbon filter every 6–8 months (usage-dependent)
- Energy: very low on Sleep mode
- $ tips: vacuum the prefilter monthly; replace on time (better odor for fewer run hours)
Generic-filter compatibility (coming soon)
We’ll mark which products safely accept brand-approved generics and which don’t.
Planned table columns: Model • Official filters • Known generics • Notes.
Quick ways to lower TCO (without DIY)
- Run devices in sleep/low; schedule loud cycles for daytime.
- Buy consumables in bulk (pads/filters/liners).
- Keep pumps and impellers clean monthly (extends life, fewer replacements).
- Use silicone mats and anti-vibration pads to stop resonance (less “trial” spending).
